Well shit. I was messing with this for awhile, and I was about to post how I did it... but it seems the debian wiki was updated just a few hours ago: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid

I had the netinst media for amd64. I basically used my Ubuntu LiveCD to install grub2. meh. Took awhile. Also, I used JFS for my root partition... It won't mount read-write until after an fsck if not properly shut down. So it helps to have jfsutils installed lol.

Actually I had so much trouble, because the jfs thing threw me off, that I did my entire install from within my Ubuntu Live CD using debootstrap. Make sure you edit /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/fstab afterwards. Boot up the minimal system and run tasksel to install the rest. You'll also want to install a linux-image. X Windows doesn't do much if you're missing /lib/modules/ ;)

I don't know why I went through the pain. My original intentions were to remove the RAID configuration. I ended up moving it to the nVidia nForce4/nvraid controller.. It's 3Gbps vs 1.5Gbps I think. Then I moved it back because I didn't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling XP, or trying to manually edit the registry to use the nvidia drivers at boot time instead of the sii3114..

so, now, after all that, I have Debian. I'm not sure yet if there was any point to this. Ubuntu is about the same, right? Now, onward to hack the GoFlex Home 2TB NAS!
